Tech Note Java Memory Performance Adjustments

June 2007

If your machine has 1GB or more of system memory (RAM) you can make an adjustment to the shortcut used to launch VideoFOCUS or VFSource which may improve performance. Improvements will be more likely to be noticed for those of you who demultiplex long sequences of video or have large numbers of video sessions present in your system at the same time.

To make the change to the desktop shortcut:
1) right click on the VideoFOCUS shortcut on the desktop.
2) Select properties.
3) When the properties panel opens edit the target line changing the
"-Xmx256M" option as described below. Make sure to leave all other options intact.

  • If your system has between 1GB and 2GB of system memory (RAM) change the option to "-Xmx512M"
  • If your system has 2GB or system memory (RAM) or greater change the option to "-Xmx1024M"

Remember that your will need to do the same thing for both the shortcut on the desktop and the one which appears under the start menu if you use both ways to start VideoFOCUS or VFSource.

To make the change to the startup shortcut:
1) Under the start menu, find the VideoFOCUS or VFSource icon.
2) Right click on it and select properties.
3) When the properties panel opens edit the target line to change the
"-Xmx256M" option as stated above. Make sure to leave all other options intact.
